HORROR VACUI

On Friday March 13th, the art installation Horror Vacui by Sarah Jonker will celebrate it’s grand finale in Bushwick Brooklyn at The Cola Connection Gallery.

Floor, ceiling, walls, and doors covered with drawings. The art installation Horror Vacui functions as a bridge to a world infused with deep and uncontrollable feelings, fears, jokes, fantasies, and moments of madness intertwined.
The visual artist Sarah Jonker attempts to make the contradictory, polyphonic, indomitable, and overwhelming activity of the mind in a state of distress visual and tangible. An inescapable, at times oppressive, bustle, with drawn texts and written drawings rife with emotion and humor.
By working with Dutch and American mental health institutions, as well as local Brooklyn-based artists, Jonker intends to use Horror Vacui as a space to examine the interplay between mental health and the fast pace of an urban environment like New York City.

Bach and Bleach

at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club
Music performance by Esther Apituley
Directed by Erwin Maas

Esther Apituley, the Amsterdam-based violist, has an unparalleled ability to convey the immediacy and vitality of the classical and contemporary repertoire.

The theatrical concert Bach and Bleach had its US premiere June 2019 at La Mama Theatre in New York.

It is a story of a classical musician and a Bosnian refugee with an incredible array of live music surrounding it; eight young talented musicians (from both New York and The Netherlands), a NY based choir and actress.

the show received rave reviews and because of popular demand it was decided to remount it for a longer Off Broadway run in the coming years (more information coming).

Untitled 2020

The Cola Connection is working right now on bringing Untitled by Nineties Productions to New York. The Nineties are not connected to one specific theater but love to travel like nomads, always looking for new spaces to play in and to reach a new kind of audience. Untitled is a performance and tv-show combined, both a concert and a party, aired live from different locations. This performance is a contemporary interpretation of TV Party, an unscripted and unstructured tv-show made in the 80’s in New York. As counterpart to the media and politics of that time, the show invited artists and entrepreneurs who gave space to each other’s perspective of the world and the arts. The show made room for unpolished and raw thoughts. In Nineties version of the show, you may expect performances, musical acts, live video images, dramatic stories, the return of childhood-heroes, an art race, community-drift and philosophical frames.

The Monkey’s on The Table

by Sarah Jonker opened Saturday June 16th 2018. This exhibition was the first project produced by The Cola Connection at lingerie boutique The Rack Shack. Jonker’s work was hanging for a week until Saturday June 23rd. All drawings where for sale. Prices differentiated between $200-$600
Sarah Jonker's drawings are poetically theatrical.
Her dark, absurd universe is jam-packed with detached limbs and blatant sexuality. Created in India ink, crayon, and ecoline, her compositions conjure elements of surrealism and postimpressionism. More importantly, they will make you laugh and desire to be a statue.Jonker is a Dutch visual and performing artist. In 2006, she graduated from the prestigious Academy of Theater in Arnhem, The Netherlands. In conjunction with her acting career, she has produced artwork for shows by Dutch theater companies including De Toneelmakerij and Likeminds.

Over the course of her career, Jonker has achieved recognition as both an actor and a visual artist. She has had exhibitions in Arnhem, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Alkmaar, and Berlin, and The Cola Connections is delighted to debut her work in New York City.
